Vision 2021

For over 75 years Lutheran Outdoors Ministry of Texas (LOMT)/Camp Lone Star has been serving the LCMS Texas District congregations as well as many other youth and adults. Building off this rich history, we are seeking the Lord’s will of how to better live out our Mission and Core Values for the transformation of lives through Adventurous Christ-Centered Fun. In order to discover where the Lord is leading, we hosted 8 Kitchen Table Talks all over Texas. We collected over 1,600 voices to help shape the future of LOMT.

The Board spent time walking through a prioritization tool in order to finally arrive at the top 5 ministry initiatives. After taking 40 days to pray over these, the Board officially voted to approve and adopt the following Vision 2021 Ministry Initiatives:

M.I.1: Define & Unify our Ministry Identity

This initiative will define our identity, brand and culture and bring unity to who we are and what we are known for as a ministry organization.

Included in this initiative:

  • Clearly communicate our organizational name
  • Enhance our mission statement and core values
  • Commission a new logo and branding guidelines/elements

What we’re currently doing:

  • The Long-Range Planning Committee met in January 2020 to analyze comments from the Kitchen Table Talks, full-time and summer staff regarding the mission statement. The committee proposed an enhanced mission statement to consider. The Board of Directors officially approved the enhanced mission statement June 6, 2020. Please see the Mission Statement document included.
  • We have begun working with PlanNorth Architects, in conjunction with our Master Plan, to develop new branding guidelines/elements and logo ideas.

M.I.2: Create a Campus Master Plan

This initiative will help us to reconfigure our physical campus to (re)design buildings, activities, housing, trails, and more to best serve our guests and accomplish our mission.

Included in this initiative:

  • Analyzing our current capacity and facility needs
  • Analyze River Property asset and accessibility
  • Develop a staged 15-year Master Plan

What we’re currently doing:

  • We have begun working with PlanNorth Architects, out of Brenham, TX, since January 2020.
  • After an in-depth discovery period, they began identifying greatest campus needs through conversations with Board leadership and developing design plans.
  • In June, PlanNorth presented their findings which included floorplans and locations for new full-time staff duplex housing, an extensive renovation to the Johnson Retreat Center, and a new Youth Base Camp Dining Hall. Please see the Master Plan Sneak Peek document included.

M.I.3: Develop & Implement a Financial Sustainability Plan

This initiative will analyze our current financial structure and business practices, conduct market research and make necessary changes to adapt for long-term financial sustainability.

Included in this initiative:

  • Develop financial operational best business practices
  • Conduct a holistic budget analysis with 3-5 year forecasting
  • Establish a long-term capital improvements fund
  • Reassess rates & fees structure

What we’re currently doing:

  • Fall 2020, our Finance Committee will begin to meet and evaluate our financial operations.

M.I.4: Develop & Implement a Sustainable Offsite Ministry Program

This initiative will create a plan to expand ministry opportunities beyond our current campus by partnering with churches, schools, communities to reach those who otherwise would not have the opportunity to have a Christian camp experience.

Included in this initiative:

  • Urban Base Camp expansion to multiple host congregations
  • A plan to increase off-site partnership with congregations during the year
  • Increase local community involvement

What we’re currently doing:

  • As a result of COVID-19 we had to cancel our Urban Base Camp Beta test year with Pilgrim Houston but are planning on returning in 2021.
  • We have applied for a grant to purchase a mobile climbing wall to grow our program materials.

M.I.5: Update & Expand Existing Program Areas

This initiative will allow us to update and expand existing program ministry areas (i.e. challenge course, archery, lake, tomahawk, etc.) to serve more guests at each activity site with higher quality equipment.

Included in this initiative:

  • Renovate and expand existing high ropes challenge course & tower
  • Renovate and/or expand archery, tomahawk ranges, sand volleyball court, and battle bow area

What we’re currently doing:

  • After our Master Plan is approved, we will chart out expansion opportunities and develop a staged plan to implement renovations and expansions.
  • After our financial sustainability plan has been developed, we will be able to make informed choices of how to best budget these capital improvements.
